Wormbins Made Easy

Want to learn how to compost without outdoor space during the cold winter months? Let the NYC Compost Project on Staten Island show you how to create compost indoors with red wiggler worms. The Staten Island NFP Association will be hosting its Third Annual Staten Island not-for-profit Conference on Friday, March 22, 2013 on the beautiful grounds of Snug Harbor Cultural Center. This year’s conference, presented by Potter & LaMarca, LLP will bring together over 150 local SINFPA member organizations for a day that provides a forum for our members to: form effective partnerships, receive important information to help grow and further expand their outreach in the community and participate in a series of sessions led by locally-based professionals and experts in the field of professional development.
Island Sounds: A 500 Year Music Mash-Up series consists of free concerts, screenings, musical conversations and workshops being presented at Snug Harbor in 2013 in connection with the multi-media, interactive exhibit, Island Sounds: A 500 Year Music Mash-Up, that commemorates musicians and artists who were born, lived or worked in Staten Island throughout the years. Open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for students and seniors. Children under 12 are admitted free.
Looking Closely: Microorganisms!

Observe and draw decomposers and other natural organisms using our microscopes and lenses. The NYC Compost Project on Staten Island will be on hand to discuss and describe the role of these tiny life forms in our vast world. Visits by the artist Colman Rutkin on occasion. Looking for new and interesting ways to introduce your students to environmental sustainability? Attend the NYC Compost Project on Staten Island Teacher Open House! Learn about composting activities that can be incorporated into a variety of curricula. The following special guests will be in attendance:
The Greenbelt Environmental Education Department, located at the Greenbelt Nature Center and High Rock Park, offers many ways to connect with the natural environment including class trips, guided hikes, Into the Outdoors programs, early childhood education programs, and a Summer Day Camp.
Grow to Learn NYC works to inspire, promote and support the creation of sustainable gardens in NYC public schools.
The Staten Island Zoo offers natural history and animal related programs that can complement your current curriculum.

Staten Island was home to the first airplane factory in the USA. Eventually, four factories and over 20 landing sites were built, but they would not sell Charles Lindbergh a plane!
Bring your little ones to this free, interactive, 45-minute concert that’s designed for children ages three to six, and fun for the whole family!
Family music’s first soul band Shine and the Moonbeams captures the fun, sweetness, and simplicity of youth in a groovy R&B package. With compassionate verses on important subject matter such as standing up to bullies and celebrating individuality, kids and adults will identify with Shine’s insightful lyrics and soulful melodies.
