IN SCHOOL PROGRAMS

ARCHITECTURE AND HISTORY

Using your schools neighborhood and the historic buildings of the Snug Harbor compound, children learn the fundamentals of form, shape, pattern and use in a series of age appropriate sessions. Dance, creative movement, sketching, collage, book-making, architectural model design, quiet observation and discussion all contribute to an appreciation of different styles of architecture and contemporary art, as well as an understanding of how buildings may be preserved, adapted and reused.

  • Architectural Elements & Materials:   (1 Visit, 4 Sessions) Grades: K-2

  • Architecture and Community:  (5 Sessions) Grades: 2-5

  • Pediments to Porticos:   (5 Sessions) Grades: 6 -8, 9-12

Teaching Artist Residencies

Snug Harbor instructors and teaching artists are available to travel to the school to conduct workshops and in-school residencies with students, parents, and teachers.  Arrangements can also be made for study units that include both in-school and on-site programming; these can be a combination of programs listed or a more in-depth experience with one topic.  These programs can be targeted to a specific grade level and are designed to tie in with other topics that classes are studying.  We are also happy to work with schools to develop unique programs tailored to specific needs. Programs available to travel to schools are:

  • Visual Arts
  • Performing Arts
  • History of Snug Harbor
  • Literacy and Visual Arts
  • Professional Development
  • Theatre and Literacy (New)

ON-SITE PROGRAMS

ARCHITECTURE AND HISTORY

A SHCC educator guide will greet your group and provide an historic overview of the architecture, history & grounds. Students’ understanding of each segment of Snug Harbor’s history is reinforced creatively with the following activities:

  • Archishapes (Grades: K–2) - Using geometric shapes and patterns, students will create an architectural “Snuggie” hat or collage.

  • Building Detectives: Scavenger Hunt (Grades: K-2, 3- 5, 6-8) - Through observation, students will learn about Snug Harbor’s History, design of the built environment and the terminology used to describe it.

  • Creative Columns (Grades: 3–5, 6-8) - Students will explore various techniques in clay, then work to create a creative column.
  • Adaptive Reuse at Snug Harbor (Grades 6-8, 9-12) - After comparing past and current uses of various spaces, students will team with a partner to redesign an existing building for a new use.

  • Stained Glass Images (Grades 3-5) - Students will create their own unique faux stained glass design.

  • Postcards from Snug Harbor (Grades: 3–5) - Snug Harbor’s unique history is presented through original documents such as menus, Music hall programs and personal accounts of the lives of the sailors and the creation of a corresponding visual postcard in mixed media.

  • Constellations (Grades 3-5, 6-8) - Students observe mythological images present throughout the site with a focus on the historic constellation windows in the Visitors’ Center.  Students discuss various constellations and the sailors’ myths associated with them, and then work to create an original constellation and write a brief myth explaining its origin.
